Bond Game publisher Activision’s recent registration several new domain names under the GoldenEye banner has lead to new speculation of a direct port of the Classic N64 Bond game. The domains were regestured by Mary Tuckon at Activision Publishing and domains are hosted on Activision’s nameservers.

The new domains registered are:

  • goldeneye007gamereloaded.com
  • goldeneyereloadedgame.com
  • goldeneyereloaded007.com
  • goldeneye007reloaded.com

What caught everyone’s attention is the term Reloaded. “Reloaded” far as older video games are concerned can mean a updating of a classic game to play on the new HD Consols (xb0x 360 & PS3). However the history of the iconic Nintendo 64 007 Game is complicated;  GoldenEye 007 was published by Nintendo and developed by Rareware for the Nintendo 64 console (N64). Meaning Rareware owns the original code to the game, and Nintendo owns the publishing rights. In 2002 Microsoft bought Rareware lock stock and barrel (Nintendo’s 49% and the other owners 51%),  Microsoft spent many year trying to republish GoldenEye 007 for the Xbox live market place. Nintendo was successful in their attempts to block the game from coming to Xbox. From there the politics get ugly culminating in Nintendo’s ill-conceived publishing of a “remake” of the original GoldenEye, using the parts of the game they controlled. Nintendo’s window for making the new Wii game was claim they were making a new game based on the 1995 GoldenEye movie, but to make the game Nintendo had to partner with Activision the current Bond Video Game licence holder.

This unholy alliance proffered a lacklustre game, one that tired to cash in on the nostalgia for the original game without actually copying the Classic. This creates problems of it’s own however the real tragedy was they decided to use Daniel Craig and crew to voice and image the new game. A poor concept to begin with seeing as all of the GoldenEye cast would have been available for Nintendo’s re-imaging of the game. Inexplicable in the light of 2005s From Russia With Love video game featuring the likeness and voice of Sean Connery 42 years after the movie it was named for was in the theatres!

The Wii edition of GoldenEye 007 probably did well enough to please the good people at Nintendo and Activation, however it only sold marginally better than the other 007 game released last year (Blood Stone) . Supposedly Blood Stone sold so badly it caused the gaming division behind it to close up shop. However neither of last years games could hold a candle to the original GoldenEye.

Some of the speculation is the Activision will introduce essentially the Wii version of the game “reloaded” to the Xbox and PS system. This may be entirely correct since the it would take Microsoft, Activision, and Nintendo coming to a mutually beneficial agreement to re-release the original N64 GoldenEye.

When we hear ‘GoldenEye 007 reloaded’ the first place most peoples minds go is to a proper port of the classic game, sadly at this early point it looks unlikely but we will stay on top of  this  story as it develops.

Special Thanks to “Omega” for digging up all of the research.
