Facebook fans protest the Heineken sell out.

The internet is awash with people outraged by EON selling out Bond to Heineken. So much so EON is dedicating valuable time and energy to try and put down these open acts of rebellion. So far the lukewarm rebuttals have only added to the aggravation, the mainline of defense (or chief excuse) is the ballooning Bond budgets and the ever growing need to subsidize them. Little consolation for Bond fans (and average movie goers) who subsidize the total cost of the movies (including P&A) through every ticket, video game, DVD, Blu-ray, iTunes and other digital copies bought with their hard earned money.

But how did this become the last straw. Since 2006 Bond has been thuggish lout who couldn’t be bothered to give damn about much of anything let alone his beverage of choice, so why now do fans suddenly draw the line at this? Causal fans everywhere are sounding off about their disappointment about Bond Beer deal, a Facebook group dedicated to protesting this has cropped up and even Roger Ebert has chimed in;

In some ways this may be Heineken’s fault (darn there goes our sponsorship deal!) they have a history of very crass advertisements that often get in the way of movies and Television shows they are sponsoring. Then there is the poorly thought out press release trumpeting the unprecedented deal. Unprecedented is the important word here, it told people what to expect. It told people change is coming.

Bond/Heineken promotional deals were in comparison rather sedate affairs often using the Bond girl of the day or other series actor to promote the green bottle. The time Pierce Brosnan was used it was tactfully done, but it also was not the actor filming a scene in the movie or filming a new appearance for the advertisement. Back then the producers were very conscious of protecting the traditional Bond image.

Nobody at EON or Heineken should have been surprised by this protest, in 2006 a similar rumor of Jimmy Bond Craig sipping beer on screen slipped out, there was a wave of objection back then so anyone paying attention to their audience had to be aware there could be blow back from a decision like this.

Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli were foolish to allow Heineken to use their names in such a manner as the press release did. It provided the impression that Bond sold out, and the producers reveled in the joy of the Heineken®.

There is no longer any question the production despertly needed the cash infusion brought by such a deal, thus leaving them open to the sell out charges. But what were they thinking? Why did they not to take the small precaution of reassuring their audience before the bomb dropped? It’s quite possible they didn’t see a problem, even when early tabloid rumors were that their star was unhappy about the deal as well. They may have well expected their fans to get in line as they always do, after all EON has gotten away with so much since 2005 (trashing 40 years of history ) it must have hardly seemed credible Bond asking for an ‘ice cold one’ could cause such a stir.

Which brings us to our next problem, Bond in the guise of Daniel Craig being used to sell beer through his image on the bottle and in television spots. Beyond the idea of tarnishing the Bond brand is the reality of the competition. In 2006 Dos Equis beer launched The Most Interesting Man In The World ad campaign.  It features suave sophisticated character with bits of film footage recounting his many fantastic adventures and accomplishments, then the character smoothly adds his catchphrase selling the beer,  “I don’t always drink beer,” he says, “but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis. Stay thirsty, my friends.”

This is how James Bond 007 should be used to sell beer if ever the fateful decision be made. Alas the decision has been made but what we are likely going to see is a series of tough guy pouting acts by Craig and some very painful “Make mine a Heineken.” & “It’s my favourite choice of beer. I drink it every morning – doesn’t everybody?”

The same people who brought us the ill considered Women’s Day PSA putting 007 in drag thought it was time to commit to larger footprint from Heineken. What’s done is done we can only hope the complaints from wide range of people; from Bond actors, to reporters & critics, and average fans has some impact in limiting crass product placements.

We expect is that after the loud fan objections whatever the on screen Heineken portrayal will be, it will be rather scaled back and tame in lieu of what some are expecting. Still what will the reaction be when Craig inevitably turns the bottle until the label faces the audience in all the inescapable glory of the 30 ft tall theater screen.

The Bond Heineken controversy refuses to ‘just be a good boy and die’. While we have not had a lot to say about this issue… yet (problems with consume rental and hiring  a marching band for the press conference), Maud Adams (Octopussy) has weighed in. She like many other fans have a big problem with the Bond franchise selling out the traditional Bond image for a sponsor.

Former Bond Girl Maud Adams is not impressed that James Bond will drink a Heineken beer instead of his usual Vodka Martini cocktail in ‘Skyfall’.

Maud Adams is unhappy James Bond is going to be seen drinking a beer in new movie ‘Skyfall’.

The 67-year-old Swedish actress starred opposite Roger Moore in two Bond films, ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ and ‘Octopussy’, and she is unimpressed that current 007 Daniel Craig will be seen supping a Heineken instead of his trademark Vodka Martin cocktail after Heineken USA agreed a deal to be featured in the movie.

Maud thinks the change of drink will make the suave British spy appear less elegant.

She told Swedish entertainment magazine EXTRA: ”Even though it’s a good beer, this has gone too far.

”Martini was something elegant when I served Roger Moore and it is elegant to this day.”

in ‘Octopussy’ Maud played the jewel smuggling title character and was seen on screen serving Roger one of the iconic drinks.

As part of Heineken’s deal Daniel will also appear in character for a TV commercial for the drinks brand which will air all over the world and will be created by Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam with ‘Skyfall’ director Sam Mendes acting as a consultant.

The 44-year-old actor will also appear as the spy on special packs of the beer.

Some reports have The Bond Heineken deal as a $45 million dollar promotion,  we have not been able to confirm this figure, we believe some news sources may be confusing the total product placement income for Skyfall with this one deal.

MGM & Sony has produced a new agreement to raise £30 million from product placement.

Die Another Day (2002) £44 million, Casino Royale (2006) £30 million, Quantum of Solace (2008) £50 million

No question the tough financial conditions, the shaky health of MGM, and bloated cost of producing the Bond movies have driven the Bond makers to make concession they would not have made in previous years. Craig’s salary alone is £8 million, not counting producers fees this and other fees the director or other actors might be getting the movie starts production with a huge deficit. As Craig himself pointed out these movies cost a lot to make and at least as much to advertise. No small wonder the porducers seek to off set the cost of production by selling product placement, which is increasingly becoming more of a bother to fans because the Bond franchise does not have a healthy record of seamlessly including products.

Ah, jeez right after we got done defending the Bond team in the last story this story comes up. Team Bond took to chain saws chopping down two old trees meeting with protest from local residents.  No obvious defence suggests itself other than pointing out 100 year old tree can mean just about anything, doesn’t necessary mean the trees were historically significant or that the Bond team didn’t have permission to cut them.

What does appear is a pattern of  behaviour from the Bond production team dealing with local populations. Probably to their surprise the people of Turkey are not pleased as punch to have the Bond team walk all over them for a movie many will never have the luxury of watching. Vandalizing the worlds oldest bazaar for some unfathomable reason doesn’t sit well with the residents.

Environmental Massacare Committed For Skyfall in Istanbul

The new Bond movie Skyfall allegedly commits enviromental massacare in Istanbul according to a Turkish paper.

Istanbul scenes of 25 th of the Bond series Skyfall has stirred quite a controversy in Turkey. The scenes of the movies are being shot on and over famous 600 years old Grand Baazar. During the motorcyle chase shooting over the baazar, the roof of the historical building and 500 years old adjacent wooden building was damaged.

Turkish daily Habertürk reports that 2 trees, each over hundred years old, was cut to make the shooting smoother for the crew of the movie. Enviromental activists protested alleged cuttings and said Istanbul is sacrifed for a movie on the name of promotion of the city by the movie.

 

 

During the shooting of a scene over the weekend, a motorcycle entered a historical jewelry store, located inside the Grand Bazaar, through its front window, scattering the displayed jewelry all over the floor. The owner of the store, Mete Boyberi, said his store was built between 1461 and 1489 and no measures were taken to protect it during the filming. “Who would be held accountable if my store burned down because of the motorcycle?” he asked.

On Monday, three motorcycles rode on the roof of the Grand Bazaar, built in 1785. The footage during the filming was broadcast on the evening news. The Habertürk daily reported on Wednesday that dozens of tiles cracked as a result of the motorcycles driving over the roof and that a wooden divider was put on the bazaar side so that the damaged tiles could not be seen.

According to the Habertürk report, Faruk Bektaş, a board member of the foundation of the Grand Bazaar store owners, said the motorcycles rode on plastic tiles that replaced the original tiles before filming. Bektaş said the film crew removed the tiles in an area of roughly 100 square meters and placed other tiles for the movie scenes, adding that officials from the İstanbul Governor’s Office, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality continuously oversee filming at the historic building. He argued that the movie will be useful in promoting the Grand Bazaar and boost tourism.

Art history professor Gönül Cantay told the daily that the filming should have been supervised by the Directorate General for Foundations (VGM), Turkey’s authority on historical buildings, or the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. He said it is “unacceptable” that historical buildings are damaged for the sake of a movie. Cantay added that the problems regarding the protection of the Grand Bazaar did not start with the movie and that the building has been in need of repair for a long time.

Residents of the neighborhood where the James Bond movie is being filmed have also claimed that trees, including two centuries-old trees, were cut down for the movie. The municipality denied the allegations, saying seasonal maintenance is under way.

Bond SMASH!!!

Like bulls in a china shop the Skyfall team come to town. While shooting a chase scene for the upcoming Bourne Redux..errr.. we mean Skyfai.l..err.. Spyfall..er..Skyfall, a stuntman riding a motorcycle crashed through the store front of 330 year old shop in Istanbul. The stuntman lost control after swerving to avoid extras on set.

The jewellery shop owners complained to Turkish news papers trying to draw attention to their plight. They clam the Skyfall team never bothered to check on them or the loss of business they will suffer because of this. While in this story the Bond 23 team sound like callous imperialists abusing their position. And there may be some truth to this, especially when viewed though the eyes of the locals watching in wide eyed wonderment as Hollywood comes to town. However we should take time to mention productions daring to film on location can be victims of shake downs by local residents. This happened during the production of Quantum of Solace.

Also a big production like …err. S.k.y.f.a.l.l have insurance policies just in case of accidents such as this. While we don’t disbelieve the shop owners for now we will give the benefit of the doubt to the Bond production team. Hopefully they will make sure the right thing is done.

(Reuters) – A stuntman in the new James Bond film “Skyfall” now shooting in Istanbul lost control of his motorcycle and smashed into the window of a 330-year-old shop in the city’s 15th-century Grand Bazaar, Turkish media said on Monday.

The stuntman swerved to avoid hitting extras while careering through the Grand Bazaar at high speed, the NTV news channel said, but then crashed into the jewellery shop and smashed its crystal glass window.

“It is very nice for the Grand Bazaar to be chosen as a location for shooting this kind of movie. But the bazaar’s administration … didn’t notify us the shooting would be like this,” said Mete Boybeyi, the owner of the shop which once served members of the Ottoman court from the nearby palace.

“This place is regulated by the Council of Monuments. We can’t even change our window without their permission,” he said.

The bureaucracy involved in replacing the window would take quite some time, Boybeyi said, and that would mean the shop would remain shut and a loss of revenue.

“No one from the movie crew came to ask ‘what are your losses?’,” Boybeyi said. “We filed a complaint at the police station.”

Skyfall, due for release in October this year, is the 23rd film in the popular and lucrative Bond series. Full details of the plot are a fiercely guarded secret, but in the film, producers say, “Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her”.

The 1963 Bond film “From Russia with Love” and the 1999 Bond film “The World is Not Enough” were also filmed on location in Istanbul, one of the world’s most historic cities which sits on the banks of the Bosphorus dividing Europe and Asia.

Yes we are all about the books today. Ian Fleming Publications announced William Boyd as the new Bond novelist. Boyd will be taking Bond back to the sixtys, supposedly with they style and flare of Ian Fleming. OK, at this point a lot of you are wondering a.) haven’t we already been down this road with the awful Sebastian Faulks? , and b.) what the hell happened to Jeffery Deaver?

To answerer your last question first Ian Fleming Publications is only currently giving one book contract to each new author. Although we have yet to hear back from Fleming publications about our submission, “A handsome well dressed gentleman walks into a bar, orders a drink, and gives a DAMN!“, we wont hold are collective breaths for a call back. However it does appear Deaver is another one and done, a shame since a few in our forum felt he did a better job, more authentic to Fleming’s ideals, retooling Bond for the 21st century, more credible than say, oh, the current producers of the movie series.

Aside from getting very confusing it is a very poor use of Bond fans, giving authors a shot only to have no plans allowing follow ups. Bond has traditionally been a series, seems as if  the foundation is abandoning this idea.

William Boyd to write new James Bond novel

Boyd takes Bond back to the Sixties with all the style and flair of Ian Fleming

William Boyd, the award-winning and bestselling author of Restless and Any Human Heart, is to write the next James Bond novel.

The novel, which is yet to be titled, will be published in the UK and Commonwealth in autumn 2013 by Jonathan Cape – Ian Fleming’s original publisher and an imprint of Vintage Publishing – and simultaneously by HarperCollins Publishers in USA & Canada. Rights were sold in the English language by Jonny Geller of Curtis Brown, on behalf of Ian Fleming Publications Ltd.

William Boyd is the third author in recent years to be invited by the Ian Fleming estate to write an official Bond novel, following in the footsteps of the American thriller writer Jeffery Deaver, who wrote Carte Blanche in 2011, and Sebastian Faulks, whose Devil May Care was published to mark Ian Fleming’s centenary in 2008.

Boyd is a writer of international acclaim whose 11 novels and short-story collections have been translated into over 30 languages with many of them adapted for film and television. While the details and title of the next 007 adventure naturally remain secret, the author has revealed that next year’s publication will mark a return to ‘classic Bond’ and will be set in the late 1960s.

Boyd comments: “When the Ian Fleming estate invited me to write the new James Bond novel I accepted at once. For me the prospect appeared incredibly exciting and stimulating – a once-in-a-lifetime challenge. In fact my father introduced me to the James Bond novels in the 1960s and I read them all then – From Russia with Love being my favourite.”

Corinne Turner, Managing Director of Ian Fleming Publications Ltd, comments: “William Boyd is a contemporary English writer whose classic novels combine literary elements with a broad appeal. His thrillers occupy the niche that Ian Fleming would fill were he writing today and with similar style and flair. Oh noes! The sky is falling!!! No Skyfall novelization. What has the world come to!?!?!  Not that this should come as much of a surprise, the current neo-Bourne reboot has not had novelizations for either entry. The last Bond movie to have a tiein book was Die Another Day ten years ago.

There are various reason for not authorizing a tiein novel, some speculated spoilers were a possible concern, probably not since there is a Video Game coming which if it should follow the same story as the movie will be chockablock with spoilers. Also publication could be delayed to coincide with the movies release.

Another possibility is the is no there is Bond Book Author of record to write the novel, the last tie in were written by the current Bond authors, John Gardner penned License To Kill and Goldeneye, Raymond Benson penned Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is not Enough, and Die Another Day.

One theory is the hectic production scheduled and late delivery of the script prevented the possibility of a tiein, fueling this speculation is the catastrophe Quantum of Solace was. The chaotic QOS script is now the root of all evil if we are to believe the official company talking point, some believe the script was so bad and being worked on to such a late date there was no way a novel could be adapted. There could be something to this however TND also had a chaotic script to screen life and still a tiein was still managed.

Another theory is poor projected profits for a tiein, which admittedly have short shelf lifespans. This idea may have some merit, however as part of the over all decision. There will likely be a few collectors editions coffee table size behind the scenes of books coming out, expensive to produce, expensive to buy, but there is collectors market that supports them. If we consider how much the book marked has changed since Die Another Day graced bookstore shelves, e publications and such, along with a tepid sales, the cost of publication (killing all those trees), along with hiring an author, for which their is none on staff right now, then it does not make as much sense to publish a novelization as Bond fans might think.

Bondbook.com - Ian Fleming Publications has confirmed for me that there will NOT be a novelization of Skyfall, the new James Bond film currently in production. This will be the first time a non-Fleming titled Bond film has not been novelized. The last novelization was Die Another Day by Raymond Benson in 2002.

It’s a  M related spoiler which most paying attention to the development of Bond 23 have suspected for a long time.

Fist a little bit of casting news

The Daily Mail reports the lovely Tonia Sotiropoulou is being touted as a new Bond Girl, she had tired out for the role of Severn, for which Bérénice Marlohe won the role.

A touch of spoilers below.

The scene Tonia has is rumoured to be part of the opening/pre-title sequence of the movie. Leading eventually to a recycled train chase in Turkey. (The train chase was originally a GoldenEye stunt that was shelved.)

According to the Daily Mail  Tonia is helping to smuggle Craig in to the country after it is believed he is dead. Wait a minute, that seems familiar….

Tonia will be on location for five days in Istanbul to film the opening sequence in which Bond is smuggled into the country after being believed to be dead

Wait. No don’t tell me they will cover Craig in gold paint to smuggle him in a barrel of crude oil while he is wearing the wetsuit from the pre-title sequence of Goldfinger complete with bird atop his head.

Recycling old unused stunts is sort of a Bond tradition, if they can’t use a stunt one movie they try to use it in another. With the You Only Live Twice plot device recycling news it seems they are once again using parts of old/classic Bond movies (DB5 anyone?), to try to tug at the fans heartstrings and play off the sentiment of us classic Bond fans. Let hope for the sake of the franchise they do a better job in Skyfall than they did in that awful art-house wannabe film Quantum of Solace.

This is something most of us have suspected, it is not confirmed but fits with what is known of the Bond 23 production. Still take it with a pinch of salt at this point. We do know for years Judi Dench has wanted to leave the role but was always talked into doing another .

BFF WORLD EXCLUSIVE: Insanely Massive Skyfall News

 

We have it from a fairly iron-clad source (a member of the Skyfall team) that there’s going to be a fairly momentous death in the next Bond film.

“We’ve just filmed M’s death scene. Judi Dench is leaving the franchise.”

So Skyfall will feature the death of our beloved M. Well, either that or a fairly extensive, not-very-Bond-like dream sequence which features Bond’s worst fears coming true. Or maybe team Skyfall are just filming LOADS of deaths just to keep us pesky journos off their tails. But to be honest, this news fits in with other rumours floating around the franchise. A couple of months ago we heard that Ralph Fiennes was set to replace Judi Dench in upcoming Bond films, but we as yet had no idea how it would happen, and indeed whether it was true. Well, there you have it folks. Shaken? Stirred? You bet we are.

Historically the Bond producers leave the theme until the last minute so it is very hard to tell if there is anything to these rumours in the first place. Adele Hints Again At James Bond Skyfall Theme Role

She says a new song will be with us in 2012

Adele has suggested that she will release a brand new song by the end of the year, further strengthening rumours she will record the official theme song for the next James Bond film.

Speaking to French radio station NRJ over the weekend, Adele discussed the future of her career and rumours that she may take five years out to make the follow up to her album ’21′.

Denying this, Adele said: “I’m not going on a break for that long! I have to write another record, if I didn’t write my own songs i’d be out next week with a new album, but because I write my own songs I have to take time and live a little bit. There was a good two years between my first and second album, so it will be the same this time.”

“There will be a new song probably coming out at the end of the year, and then it depends how quickly I write some new songs – but it won’t be for a good two years.”

Adele previously suggested she might be making the official Skyfall theme during an interview with Jonathan Ross last year.

Meanwhile, it has been claimed that Adele has lost over a stone in weight since she turned vegetarian at the start of the year.

A shocking allegation hit Turkish media about the new James Bond movie SKYFALL. IHA news agency reports that Skyfall set is being used to transport arms for Syrian dissidents who are fighting Ashad soldiers. It turns out not the scenario of the movie but itself is absolute spy scene.
The new Bond movie is currently being shot in Adana province of Turkey, where also the İncirlik air base of the Unatidet State is located. For the Skyfall shooting, main railway line of the city has been shotdown for several days. A local paper of Adana hit the shelves today claiming that shooting of tha Skyfall is a cover up for arm transportation to Syria by CIA. The paper darws attention to the fact that 13 minutes of the movie is being shot here but the star of the movie, Daniel Craig is nowhere to be found. One of the bussiest highway of the city and the railroad has been shot for several days in Adana. The paper says truck loads of stuff is being brought to the movie set and in which no media is allowed. İhlas news agency reminds the detail of the local paper being visited recently by Israel’s ambassador to Turkey, Gabi Levi.
