And so when a CIA operative introduced himself to 007 at the Hotel Splendide casino \u2013 \u201cMy name\u2019s Felix Leiter. Glad to meet you\u201d \u2013 Bond\u2019s original response was, \u201cMine\u2019s Secretan. James Secretan.\u201d The word \u201cSecretan\u201d was subsequently scrawled out in blue ink, and \u201cBond\u201d became the replacement. Grimond said that, \u201cIan must have realised it would cause confusion if he had Bond known as Bond to friends and the security services in London, but as Secretan for his cover name to strangers or people he didn\u2019t want to know he was a spy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t the only thing Fleming ended up changing before the book was published (at an on-sale price that he thought was too low, according to a newly released letter).
