In a day of tragedy we lose another treasure of our world. Sir Roger Moore passed away today after a short battle with cancer.

@sirrogermoore

It is with a heavy heart that we must announce our loving father, Sir Roger Moore, has passed away today in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer. The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone.

We know our own love and admiration will be magnified many times over, across the world, by people who knew him for his films, his television shows and his passionate work for UNICEF which he considered to be his greatest achievement.

The affection our father felt whenever he walked onto a stage or in front of a camera buoyed him hugely and kept him busy working into his 90th year, through to his last appearance in November 2016 on stage at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The capacity crowd cheered him on and off stage, shaking the very foundations of the building just a short distance from where he was born.

Thank you Pops for being you, and for being so very special to so many people.

Our thoughts must now turn to supporting Kristina at this difficult time, and in accordance with our father’s wishes there will be a private funeral in Monaco.

Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian

Speaking for myself I grew up watching Roger on the small screen then the big screen as 007. He was the last actor Ian Fleming had in some measure given his approval to, Roger went on to set records for his tenure in the role as well as the number of 007 movies he made, however these achievement pale in comparison to the impact he had on our lives. Not only did he tirelessly support many good causes to lift up the less fortunate among us, by example us he showed us how to live our lives. Roger Moore was the very definition of a gentleman, always a class act with a kind word to offer his fellow man.

I am at a loss at how to explain what he meant to me, meant to so many of us. I can only say thank you Sir Roger for being the man you were and my sincerest condolences to your family. Thank you for sharing Roger with us.

  1. Roger Moore: Nobody did it better.

    I know that phrase will be bandied about ironically for the next week or two by everyone who thinks they just invented it, but when it came to being suave, sophisticated, classy, urbane, and an all around fantastic human being I can truly say “nobody did it better” than Sir Roger Moore!

  2. Farewell Sir Roger. So many great and precious childhood memories. To honour him I’ve been rewatching all his 007 movies in order (plus episodes of The Saint as well). Last night it was the turn of “Octopussy” and to be honest it was all rather silly and implausible in places. However it was also lively, colourful, spectacular, exciting, funny, endearing, unpretentious and most importantly ENTERTAINING. You know, the sort of thing we aren’t allowed in these “more serious times”. (Ugh! Honestly? Barbara, for f–k’s sake…!)
